La joya en llamas

Danila Ilabaca
"The Jewel in Flames" is a work framed by the tragedy of fire and the loss of a home, highlighting the real estate boom. Fires (often intentionally caused) are among the most feared predators in cities abandoned by time, such as Valparaíso. On April 12, 2014, more than 3,000 homes burned in that city, marking the largest urban fire in Chile's history. As a result, 12,500 people were affected, 15 lives were lost, and over 500 people were injured.

On April 11, 2016, after two years of investigation, the Prosecutor's Office concluded that the main hypothesis regarding the fire's cause was the electrocution of two birds on power lines, closing the controversial case without identifying any culprits. It remains unclear whether the fire was intentional, but what is evident is a city forgotten and adrift, abandoned without answers from the authorities.

The title "TheJewel in Flames" clearly refers to Valparaíso as "The Jewel of the Pacific" but also to the value of the "jewel" that each person places in their home —a treasure that is hard to obtain, only to be consumed by flames in just ten minutes, perhaps for some hidden purpose.

The work visually narrates the life of a house, from its construction to its destruction by fire, ultimately replaced by a real estate development.
