Extinction
Non è un buon titolo

Sara Nicomedi

We are currently experiencing the sixth mass extinction, with around two hundred species disappearing every day.In October 2018, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)released a special report on the impacts of global warming at 1.5°C, stating that 'limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.' In the same year, I read an article in The Guardian titled 'We have 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe, warns the UN.'This awareness led me to question the reasonableness of having a child in these circumstances; from this personal reflection, the series 'Extinction isn't a good title' was born.

The urgency to share issues related to the climate crisis was followed by the desire to understand and reflect on the myriad emotions that humans can experience in response to the warnings and predictions of climate experts. These emotions include fear for the near future, responsibility, a sense of helplessness, anger, and the desire to take action.I attempted to translate these emotions into images that I have personally felt while also seeking evocative images that allowed me to visualize the future as predicted by science in the case of no immediate transformation 'in all aspects of society.'I used the collage technique to reflect on the relationship between the past and the present, our actions today, and the potential impact they will have on future generations. I included archival material from my grandparents, who lived during what is considered the onset of the Anthropocene, photographs of my parents, a generation that came of age in the 1970s, and images of the current protests by climate change and climate justice movements.

Creating this series and these images gave me the feeling of partially controlling this whirlwind of thoughts and unease.I hope that 'Extinction isn't a good title' can stimulate reflections on the present and the future of the Earth. I wonder how, when, and if this crisis will change the behavior patterns of our society. Could it be an opportunity to reevaluate genuine needs, empathy, and our relationship with nature and all other living species?
